Rediscovering Hope and Purpose After 50: Embracing the Power of Self-Worth

In the words of Benjamin Hardy, “Without hope in the future, your present life loses meaning.” This sentiment resonated deeply with me, especially as I navigated life beyond 50, where I had momentarily forgotten the enduring power of dreams. The question “Is this all there is?” lingered as the candles on my cake increased, and the uncertainties of retirement and an empty nest cast a shadow over my life.

In our youth, hope for the future is abundant, and we meticulously plan our life’s trajectory. I had mapped out my journey – obtaining a teaching degree, nurturing my child, and embracing roles as a wife and mother. However, the realization struck me: I had neglected to script the story beyond that point. Panic set in as the unknowns of this life stage loomed large, leaving me in a void, unsure of what lay ahead.

It’s easy to forget that our gifts, such as encouragement and compassion, continue to illuminate others even in the later stages of life. I had convinced myself that I was devoid of such gifts, but a crucial realization dawned – the importance of acknowledging and intentionally sharing these gifts with the world. By discounting my own abilities, I was depriving others of the light they needed.

Empowerment came when I acknowledged my self-worth and recognized the potential for new adventures and a future filled with purpose. I understood that God created each of us whole and worthy, irrespective of societal expectations. The choice to believe God and live into our worthiness became a guiding principle. It was time to shed the false self that sought constant affirmation and embrace the truth – our worth comes from God.

Many of us have allowed external voices to define us, succumbing to the belief of unworthiness. It’s crucial to replace these falsehoods with God’s truth, setting a path forward rooted in self-respect and love. I spent too long living in my false self, seeking validation and feeling the need to earn my worth. The realization that our true selves find worth in God’s eyes prompted a shift.

Raising your self-worth thermostat involves asking more of yourself. Define the life you desire, set clear goals, and allow your emotions to guide you on the journey. Growth emerges from the challenges we face, and I am grateful for the lessons learned. As you traverse your own path, remember: “You GROW through what you GO through, and I am thankful for the growth, and I know you will be too.”
